FAQ

GPA calculator questions

How is GPA calculated?
GPA = Σ(Grade Points × Credits) ÷ Total Credits. A in a 3-credit class = 4.0 × 3 = 12 quality points. B in a 4-credit class = 3.0 × 4 = 12 quality points. Total quality points ÷ total credits = GPA.
What is a good GPA?
3.5–4.0: Excellent, typically earns honors. 3.0–3.5: Good, above average. 2.5–3.0: Satisfactory. Below 2.0: Academic probation risk. Graduate schools typically require 3.0 minimum; competitive programs want 3.5+.
How many credits does it take to raise my GPA?
It gets harder the more credits you've completed. With 60 credits at 2.5 GPA, you need a 3.83 semester GPA over 30 more credits just to reach 2.83. Use the What-If calculator for your exact numbers — the answer is almost always "more than you think."
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA caps at 4.0 regardless of course difficulty. Weighted GPA (5.0 scale) gives extra points for AP, IB, and honors classes — A in AP = 5.0. Most colleges recalculate GPA themselves, so weighted GPA mainly matters for high school class rank.
